Giants and Curt Casali Discuss Reunification

The Giants have made a big splash in their home and away fields with this off-season signings. Carlos Correa and Mitch Haniger. They increased their rotation by signing Sean Manaea and Ross Stripling. One thing still on their to-do list is handling their capture troops. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle report that you have contacted the club Curt Casali about his return to the club.

When? Buster Posey Retired after 2021 season, hoped that was it Joey Bart He can step up and take over as the club’s daily backstop. Unfortunately, this has not yet come to fruition. He has some power on the plate but underscores his worth with the hits. He’s been punched in 38% of his career so far and has a .215/.296/.364 hit streak for 90 wRC+. metric in 2022. As Slusser points out in his article, Bart nudged him to work with both. Carlos Rodon or Logan Webb declined last year.

Senior Austin WynnsCurrently on the roster, he made 57 appearances for the club last year. His defensive numbers were around the league average, better than Bart, but he’s unlikely to provide much with the bat. The 32-year-old has a career batting streak of .231/.275/.337 for 68 wRC+. Blake Sabol. The Giants took it from the Reds, who took it from the Pirates in the Rule 5 draft. The juniors have great batting points but no major league experience. He also plays on the outside, making him perhaps best suited for a third catcher/utility role.

Given these options, it’s not surprising that the club is open to finding more certainty in the background. Them connected with both Sean Murphy and Christian Vazquez In recent weeks, however, each of these players has been traded to Atlanta and signed with Minnesota, respectively.

Although he was never a club’s primary option, 34-year-old Casali is an excellently serving major league catcher. Although he has played 462 career games, he has not played more than 84 in any season. He has recorded 16 Defensive Runs Recorded in his career and has been a strong defender generally behind the plate, scoring slightly above average in terms of framing. With a career hit line of .223/.316/.392 it’s also not a liability on the plate. This corresponds to a wRC+ of 92, which is 8% below the league average overall, but roughly average for a catcher. His stroke rate of 27.8% is definitely on the high side, but he also did walks with a strong 10.7%. The Giants are certainly familiar with him as he played for them in 2021 and the first half of 2022 and was handed out to the Mariners on the deadline.

Casali would be a perfectly defensible addition, but the Giants will have other options. The trading market is now dominated by the Blue Jays and their triple backstops: Danny Jansen, Alejandro Kirk and Gabriel Moreno. The free agency market now has Vázquez and Willson Contreras signed with Austin Fences, Robert Perez, Omar Narvaez and Gary Sanchez some are still out.

Neither of these options is likely to break the bank financially. Staff Resource currently pegs the Giants payroll at $190 million and the CBT figure at $206 million. They are approaching their high payroll of $201 million per dealer. Cot’s Baseball Contractsthough that was in 2018. They also have plenty of room under the luxury tax, but if they succeed in their continued attempts to retain Rodón, that would dramatically change the picture.
