Pairing warm and cool neutrals together has long been frowned upon in the world of decorating with neutrals. However, Adam Levine, a Maroon 5 Singer, and Behati Prinsloo, a Victoria’s Secret supermodel, are not ones to shy away from controversy.
Los Angeles-based interior design studio Clements Design posted photos of the couple’s living room on their Instagram, and it is an oasis of brown and gray.
Adam and Behati’s living room has high, vaulted ceilings painted in a matte white. A cozy brown velvet tuxedo sofa takes center stage, with charcoal-colored pillows bringing gray into its design. On either side, light gray Jeanneret armchairs provide more comfy seating. An ultra-low black Basalt coffee table helps the couple add decorative touches to their space.
Though brown and gray together is not the trendiest combination, home decor experts say that the couple expertly pulled off this neutral living room idea. Interior designer Glenna Stone states: ‘The contrast between the warm brown of the couch and the cool gray of the chair adds a level of difference that’s both pleasing to the eye and comfortable to experience. The brown couch acts as a grounding element, while the gray chair introduces a touch of elegance and modernity. This pairing also allows for flexibility in accessorizing the space; you can introduce accent pillows, throws, and other decorative elements in various colors to tie the two pieces together and create a cohesive look.’
Glenna Stone is the founder of Glenna Stone Interior Design where she showcases her passion for combining color, materials and textures in an artful manner. Paralleling her creative side, Glenna embraced her strong technical skills and received a degree in engineering from Lehigh University as well as a Master’s degree in Architecture and Design from Drexel University.
Mohammad Ahmed, interior designer and home expert at The Home Guidance, adds that the neutral color scheme idea creates a sense of calm in Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo’s space. ‘ Brown, being an earthy color, connects the indoor space to the outside world. When combined with gray, reminiscent of stone or metal, it evokes a sense of nature – think wood and stone. This harmonious combination is pleasing to the eye and creates a sense of serenity,’ says Mohammad.

Designers also believe that because this brown color scheme is not a passing trend, that it will remain in style forever. Mohammad states, ‘While trends come and go, neutral colors like brown and gray have a timeless quality. They don’t feel outdated quickly and can adapt to evolving styles and preferences.’
Adam and Behati’s color choices can also evolve as their style changes. Interior designer Glenna Stone adds: ‘Brown tones evoke feelings of warmth, making the room inviting and cozy, which is ideal for gathering and spending quality time. Gray, on the other hand, introduces a sense of tranquility and modern sophistication, allowing the space to remain visually fresh and stylish. Together, these colors create a versatile backdrop for various design styles, from traditional to contemporary, ensuring that the living room appeals to a wide range of tastes.’
Unfashionable no more, the combination of gray and brown is here to stay. Neutral room ideas will continue to be the rage in 2024 and beyond.
